Job Description for Seasonal Property Steward

Minimum Qualifications

 Bachelor degree or enrolled into a program studying environmental science, natural resource management, or related subject preferred;

 Familiarity with Indiana’s natural communities of plants and animals is desirable;

 Experience using outdoor power equipment or ability to learn

 Ability to carry out multiple tasks in an independent and unstructured work setting;

 Ability to lift 50 pounds or more;

 Ability to hike uneven terrain for 1- 3 miles a day with up to 30lbs on back;

 Preferred: Currently certified in CPR and First Aid;

 Preferred: Pesticide Applicators License from Indiana State Chemist.

Job Duties

 Use of herbicide to control invasive plant species using backpack and power sprayers;

 Mechanical removal of invasive species: Mowing, pruning, etc.;

 Use of GPS unit to collect data, other data collection and data management;

 Assist with planting native trees, plants, and seeds;

 Direct volunteers and lead stewardship events, as needed;

 Follow all proper safety procedures;

 Supervised by Director of Preserves and Programs, works on-site with Property Steward;

 Other duties as assigned.

Compensation

 $8 – $10 per hour, no benefits

Parameters of the Seasonal Property Steward

Type: Part time (20 hours/week on average), Professional, Seasonal (April – November)

Hours: Monday – Friday 10:30am-2:30pm; flexible to accommodate weather and weekend events

Pay Basis: Hourly

Education requirements: College degree preferred

Working Conditions: Outdoors, uneven terrain, all weather conditions

Travel: Limited

INAEP 2017 Scholarship

The Indiana Association of Environmental Professionals (INAEP) is proud to announce the release of our 2017 scholarship application. We are offering two scholarships, each for $2,000. This scholarship is open to both undergraduate students and Master’s candidates. PhD candidates are not eligible for this award. Qualified candidates must meet the following requirements.
 
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at an Indiana college or university, and are at a sophomore or higher level of study as defined by their respective school;
  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an environmental-related field;
  • Possess a GPA of 2.9 or higher; and
  • Plan to reside/work in Indiana following graduation.

Scholarship applications are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, March 17. The scholarship recipients will be announced on Friday, April 14.
INAEP is an active and robust environmental association that was founded in 2006, and currently is comprised of almost 200 individuals and over 30 corporate members. INAEP membership is a positive step for any new graduate seeking to find an environmental position in central Indiana, and a great forum for professors to liaison with business.

New Year’s Resolutions for the Environment!

This past year has been full of crucial steps toward protecting the environment…and challenges to protecting natural spaces and natural resources. From progressive strides such as the Paris Agreement, to obstacles like the pipeline that was almost erected at Standing Rock in North Dakota, 2016 has been a roller coaster of ride for those concerned with the environment, which is to say is has been an average year for those concerned with the environment.
